This all started to come together back in May, when I really, really started diving in the instrumental hip-hop scene that’s taken off across the globe. It feels like every few days we’re posting new beat tapes or albums from producers from the States, U.K., Germany, France, Japan, Russia, and so on. Not only that, but these producers have often created some of the year’s finest material, be it Paul White’s Rapping With Paul White or Man Mantis’ Cities Without Houses.

With that in mind, I wanted to put together an exclusive, Potholes-sponsored compilation showcasing some of our favorite producers. As such, we bring you Midnight Snacks, a night time-centric affair featuring 18 tracks from 18 different artists, all of whom showcase the various sides of hip-hop production. There are sample-driven bangers from guys like Danny! and Al Jieh; soaring mini-epics from Blue Sky Black Death and Citymouth; and futuristic funk from Jay Cue and the Super 3. It’s all here, y’all, and it’s all free.

Seel Fresh is back with his homie Filz dropping a new music video for their track Light it Up produced by Johnny Juliano. The video was shot at a crazy party in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood at the infamous underground venue "Club Crib". During the set there was an uncountable number of blunts in rotation and bongs being ripped . The event had many celebrity guests in attendance including Michael Phelps, Michael Jackson, Michelle and Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Seel Fresh to name a few. Bomba Tacos laced the catering with their new food truck and the video is evidence of the sickest party of the fall.

Anybody remember when hip hop music was actually interesting and you couldn't wait til certain albums dropped...IN STORES? Back then albums were so good that some of the material actually took up a life of its own, so much that certain songs had so much character that they had to have sequels! Case in point, Scarface of the Geto Boys introduced the world to his character on the Geto Boys' 1989 2nd album (but Scarface's 1st appearance!) Grip It! On That Other Level. The song spawned 2 sequels on Face's next 2 solo albums, his 1991 debut Mr. Scarface is Back & the follow up; 1993's The World is Yours.

We did a lil something for the true Big L fans out there! The track is "Now or Never", taken from "Big L: The Archives 1996-2000", a 2006 limited-edition CD of the late Harlem emcee Big L, with only 500 reported pressings. This album contains many Big L songs that were not released prior to this album's release.

The EP vinyl record A-side from 1996 contains tracks recorded for his second Columbia/SME Records LP, (unreleased to this day), including a "Games Females Play" version without Sadat X and Guru, with two never-before-heard verses by Big L, plus "Can I Hit It" and "Now or Never". The B-side (1998) features "Platinum Plus" (alternative version), featuring C-TOWN (instead of Big Daddy Kane) and an extra verse by Big L, "Who You Sidin' Wit" (Buckwild remix), without Stan Spit and instead with extra Big L verses, and finally "Furious Anger", produced by Big L and originally released on Shyheim's LP Manchild.

The CD companion to vinyl set, containing seven bonus tracks not on the vinyl releases. "Ebonics Remix" produced by original beatmaker Ron Browz (formerly known as Rondell) freaked out to an even more frenetic level, adding a verse from 16-year-old T-Rex. It also includes the previously unreleased "We Got This" featuring Mr. Cheeks of Lost Boyz, "On The Mic", "Size Em Up" Roc Raida remix (previously vinyl-only), "Deadly Combination" featuring The Notorious B.I.G. & 2Pac, "Still Here", "Platinum Plus" Hi-Tek Remix, in addition to 2 acapellas.

L.L. Cool J is hard as hell! Well not so much these days, but this record here is much closer to the "Rock The Bells" L.L. than it is to the "Hey Lover" L.L. This was actually recorded back in '94 with K-Def, but was lost (behind a radiator) until now. Slice-Of-Splice Records is going to press up 500 copies of this record, so if you have the cash click HERE to pre order your copy.

"Back in 1994 K-Def was working on some beats out of the B Room in Marly Marl's House Of Hits when LL Cool J walked in on his session and said "let's make some tracks together". Uncle L had always wanted to rhyme on a track using the famous ESG breakbeat 'UFO', so he had Def lay it down with some scratches and then went to town with the mic. Both thought they had a sure fire hit on their hands but unfortunately it was never used.

The DAT tape of the studio session was feared lost for several years before it eventually turned up stuck behind a radiator! Now, 17 years later, K-Def and Slice-of-Spice are proud to present 'Year Of The Hip Hop' in all it's vinyl glory.

As with all Slice-of-Spice pressings, no expense is being spared for this vinyl labor of love. Outside of a full color cover, with a 3mm spine, the special limited edition version comes on solid orange vinyl, with individual gold stamp numbering. Once again we're coming at you with strong cover art from the legendary Joe Buck, and personally we think this is his best one yet!"

So it really hit us hard when we read the news or were told about his demise from this world. But he was a great artist and his work will live forever.

Two young MCs by the names of Lamont Coleman and Shawn Carter, better known as Big L and Jay-Z, would change the rap music game on February 23, 1995 with their appearance on The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show. The New York City-based radio program was thee show for anything and everything hot in the up and coming East Coast rap scene.
One of the hardest to find moments of Stretch and Bobbito features an outstanding freestyle by the late rapper and another young spitter who would become one of the most respected figures in the hip hop industry. Until today, the elusive clip known as the “7 Minute Freestyle”, had not been available in it’s full glory at nine and a half minutes. After a listen, I can understand why many fans are calling it the greatest moment in the history of hip-hop radio. Their short, yet incendiary performance showcases an impeccable timing that even some of the best musicians cannot duplicate.
The released audio clip comes at the perfect time for publicity as AllHipHop.com dropped news that a posthumous Big L record of previously unreleased material is in the works. The late rapper’s family has signed off on the album which is scheduled to hit the web and the streets on November 23rd.

Big L’s “Return Of The Devil’s Son” To Be Released November 23

Ten years after his last posthumous release went gold, the hip hop community will get another dose of Digging In The Crates member Big L.
Return of the Devil’s Son will hit store shelves November 23. While other albums have bared the late emcees name, “Return” is the only one, sans The Big Picture, to have the support of Big L’s family.
“This album is supported 100% by the Big L family,” said Big L’s older brother Donald Phinazee. “I’ve been talking about this album for the last six years and it means everything to me. This is an original Big L album and I’m excited to put my brother out.”
Upon his tragic death in 1999, Big L was on the verge of hip hop stardom. The new release will give remind old fans of what could’ve been and give new fans a proper introduction to Big L, born Lamont Coleman.
“This album will show where he should have been and where he was about to go. It’s going on 12-years since he’s been gone. He would have been that one; this project will show where he should have been at,” Phinazee added.
The new release features 21 previously unheard Big L tracks including “Right To The Top” featuring Kool G Rap and Royal Flush.

Chi Ali was the youngest member of The Native Tongues that included De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Jungle Brothers, and The Beatnuts. He started rapping when he was 14 making guest appearances on songs by Black Sheep and De La Soul. His one and only album The Fabulous Chi Ali came out in 1992 when he was 16 and became an instant classic of The Golden Era. In 2000 he committed the crime of murdering his girlfriend's brother. He was arrested in 2001 and began serving a 14-year sentence for the offense. He will be released in two years.

XXLMag.com has learned that famed hip-hop record store, Fat Beats, will be closing the doors on its two remaining locations in New York and Los Angeles, next month.

In honor of Fat Beats’ 16 years in business, they will be throwing several tribute parties open to the public in both cities, as well as expected blow-out sales.

“The closing of Fat Beats is just like one of my friends passing away,” DJ Premier said in a statement. “They promoted vinyl at its highest degree for the culture of good music and that makes it more difficult to say goodbye.”

Although the physical stores will no longer in existence, fans can still shop online and the wholesale distribution operation will also continue.

“This is the start of a new era in Fat Beats,” Fat Beats owner and president Joe Abajian said, “We’re adapting to meet the needs of our demographic by revamping and improving our existing systems. While our website, which stocks everything available in our retail stores, continues to do very well, we’re still exploring our options for alternate retail locations in the future.
